Hurricane Season Preparedness

2025 Hurricane Season Outlook

Hurricane Season Preparedness-A Reminder from your Universal City Floodplain and Stormwater Division

Hurricane Evacuation RouteWe’ll soon be in hurricane season which is June 1-Novermber 30. The National Weather Service is forecasting an active season, with 19 named storms expected. Nine could develop into hurricanes, and four are projected to reach Category 3 or stronger.

Although Universal City is located about 150 miles inland, previous hurricanes like Hurricane Harvey have shown that they can weaken into tropical storms and still significantly impact our area. Heavy rainfall, flooding, and widespread power outages are common, so it’s important to be prepared.

Now is the perfect time to check your emergency kit or assemble one. A well-stocked kit should include:

  • Minimum of a 3-day supply of non-perishable food for each member of the household
  • 3-day supply of water for each member of the household
  • A “go” bag for each member of the household
  • First-aid kit, including any necessary prescription medications
  • Personal hygiene and sanitation supplies
  • Flashlights
  • Battery-operated radio
  • Waterproof container for important documents and cash (also back up digitally)
  • Manual can opener
  • Lighter or matches
  • Books, games, or other entertainment
  • Special needs items (pet supplies, baby items)
  • Cooler and ice packs
  • An evacuation plan and strategy to stay in touch with family if separated
